Gospel singer Travis Greene has voiced his concerns about the increasing focus on mental health terms, urging believers not to let therapy overshadow their spiritual life.
In a recent Instagram post made on October 2, 2024, he expressed his unease with how discussions have shifted within both the church and society.”Probably over the past year, I’ve heard people say ‘my therapist said’ way more than ‘the Holy Spirit said.’ It’s alarming,” Greene remarked. While recognizing the progress in mental health awareness, he added, “I love the advances that we’ve made in mental health psychology as a whole, but I think we create a lot of words to define just life.”
He stressed the need for balance, cautioning against giving undue weight to terms like anxiety and trauma. “Sometimes we overemphasize trauma, we overemphasize abandonment, anxiety—it is LIFE,” he explained. He also urged believers, “Don’t allow your therapist to be a substitute for your prayer life. You can know your mental state and your faith be weakened.”
Addressing the growing trend of using buzzwords in churches, Greene declared, “The name of anxiety has been more glorified than the name of Jesus in the past three years. Everybody got anxiety like it’s cute.”
He called on Christians to view anxiety as part of spiritual warfare, referring to the Bible’s teaching to “be anxious for nothing” (Philippians 4:6). “Throwing this stuff around ain’t cute. It’s spiritual warfare,” he stressed.
