13-Year-Old Chorister Revives Medieval ‘Boy Bishop’ Tradition

In a touching nod to history, a 13-year-old chorister has been appointed as the Bishop of Norwich in a ceremonial revival of the medieval “boy bishop” tradition. This annual event, observed on St. Nicholas Day, honors the patron saint of children and is marked by the symbolic handover of episcopal duties to a young member of the cathedral boys’ choir.

This year’s boy bishop, Sam Irivne, was blessed by Rt Revd Dr. Jane Steen, the Bishop of Lynn, during the special service. Sam was presented with a prayer book and delivered a heartfelt homily, reflecting on issues he is passionate about, including climate change, world peace, and fostering unity.

In his homily, Sam emphasized the role of everyone in building a better world. “I know I am young,” he said, “but I believe that if we all care about the same things—like fairness, kindness, helping the planet, and making sure everyone has a chance to live a good life—we can make the world a better place. Don’t wait for someone else to change things; take the lead and show others the way. We all have to do our part.”

The boy bishop will symbolically hold his position, assisting in church duties, until Holy Innocents’ Day on December 28. During this period, the cathedral celebrates the values of service, leadership, and faith through the lens of youthful perspective and energy.

The revival of the boy bishop tradition not only connects the cathedral community to its rich historical roots but also highlights the importance of empowering young voices in addressing contemporary challenges.
