5 Things to Do When You Feel Distanced from God

There are times in our Christian journey when God feels distant. Life’s struggles, distractions, and even our own choices can create a sense of separation from Him. However, the truth is that God never leaves us—He is always near, even when we don’t feel His presence. If you find yourself feeling far from God, here are five things you can do to draw closer to Him again.

1. Be Honest with God in Prayer

When you feel distant from God, the first step is to talk to Him openly. You don’t need fancy words—just express your feelings honestly. Tell Him your struggles, doubts, and frustrations. The psalmist David often cried out to God in moments of despair, saying, “Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” (Psalm 10:1). Yet, he never stopped praying. Even when God feels distant, He is still listening.

2. Reflect on God’s Word

The Bible is God’s way of speaking to us. If you feel distant, immerse yourself in His Word. Read passages about His love, faithfulness, and presence. Scriptures like James 4:8, which says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you,” remind us that He is always ready to welcome us back. Even if you don’t feel an instant change, keep reading. God’s Word has the power to renew your spirit.

3. Examine Your Heart and Repent if Necessary

Sometimes, the distance we feel is the result of unconfessed sin. Sin creates a barrier between us and God, not because He moves away from us, but because it dulls our sensitivity to His presence. Psalm 66:18 says, “If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.” Take time to examine your heart. If there are areas where you’ve drifted, repent and ask for God’s forgiveness. His mercy is always available.

4. Worship and Thank God, Even in the Distance

Worship is a powerful way to reconnect with God. When you praise Him—even in seasons of dryness—you shift your focus from your feelings to His greatness. Play worship music, sing, or simply speak words of gratitude. Psalm 22:3 reminds us that God inhabits the praises of His people. As you worship, you may begin to sense His presence again.

5. Stay Connected to Other Believers

Isolation can deepen feelings of spiritual distance. Surround yourself with fellow believers who can encourage and pray for you. Attend church, join a Bible study, or reach out to a trusted friend for support. Hebrews 10:25 urges us not to neglect meeting together because fellowship strengthens our faith. Being around others who love God can help rekindle your passion for Him.

Feeling distant from God is a common experience, but it’s not permanent. As you seek Him through prayer, His Word, worship, repentance, and community, you will find that He was never far away. The more you lean into Him, the more you will experience His closeness once again. Remember His promise: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). God is near—draw close to Him today.
