Liverpool Cathedral has been awarded the prestigious Eco Church Silver Award by Christian conservation charity A Rocha UK, recognizing its commitment to environmental sustainability and leadership in eco-friendly practices.
The award highlights the cathedral’s efforts to integrate faith with environmental stewardship, creating sanctuaries for wildlife, promoting sustainable practices, and inspiring the broader community. This achievement coincides with the centenary year of Liverpool Cathedral’s consecration, making it a significant milestone in its history.
Very Rev. Dr. Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, expressed her delight at receiving the award, stating, “The staff at the Cathedral and those who have advised have worked really hard over the past year to gain this Silver Award. As a Cathedral we are delighted that this has been achieved after a lot of hard work to re-think our practices. Net Zero is really important to us and we will continue to strive for this and to care for God’s world.”
Liverpool Cathedral, the largest in the UK and the fifth largest globally, has positioned itself as a beacon for environmental action within the Church of England. The award reflects its ongoing efforts to align with the Church’s ambitious Net Zero 2030 target, encouraging other churches in the Diocese of Liverpool to join the Eco Church movement.
