The Church Made Me – Kuami Eugene

Highlife sensation Kuami Eugene has credited the church for playing a pivotal role in shaping his career as a musician.

“The church made me. I learned everything I know from the church,” he said during an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie. “When I was young, I knew I would become a very great musician. So I told myself I should prepare so well before I got to the top. I prepared a lot so I can play every musical instrument that I lay my hands on. No one taught me how to play the piano; I just started playing because I had been around it for a long time.”

Kuami revealed that his early days in church gave him the platform to develop his musical abilities, learning to play instruments like the trumpet, drums, guitar, and piano. Beyond mastering instruments, he added flair to his performances by teaching himself how to execute a backflip.

The ‘Angela’ hitmaker also shared how his passion for music production led him to take a formal course to refine his skills. He began his journey as a gospel musician under the Eugene Marfo Ministries, producing gospel songs before gaining fame after competing in the MTN Hitmaker contest.

Though no longer identifying strictly as a gospel artiste, Kuami Eugene remains connected to the gospel music space. He has collaborated with notable gospel artistes such as Joyce Blessing, Empress Gifty, and Obaapa Christy, even writing songs for them. His connection to the church endures as he continues to perform gospel songs at church events and services.
