The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in partnership with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious – Ghana (CMSR-GH), has scheduled an “Environmental Prayer Walk Against Galamsey” for Friday, October 11, 2024, at 10 a.m.
The event, aimed at tackling the harmful effects of illegal mining (galamsey) on the environment, will begin at the Cathedral and conclude at Christ the King Parish, Cantonments.
In a letter dated October 4, 2024 and signed by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, the Archdiocese highlighted the significance of the event, noting that it represents their “civil, communal, and religious commitment to our country and its ecosystem which is being destroyed.”
The peaceful walk will feature participants praying the Rosary as they move through key streets, with the event culminating in a Holy Mass at Christ the King Grotto. Additionally, a petition will be delivered to the Presidency at Jubilee House.
Archbishop Kwofie called on “all priests, religious, and lay faithful” to participate in the event and demonstrate their dedication to preserving Ghana’s environment. He also urged parish priests to mobilize their parishioners for the cause.
