Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint televangelist Paula White to lead a newly formed White House Faith Office has sparked strong reactions from Christian leaders, including some within conservative evangelical circles.
White, a Florida-based megachurch pastor, is known for her association with the prosperity gospel—a doctrine that links financial contributions to spiritual rewards. Many critics argue that this teaching misleads believers by promising material blessings in exchange for donations, often suggesting specific amounts.
Several Christian leaders have publicly denounced White’s appointment, questioning both her theology and suitability for the role. One prominent critic described the decision as “an abomination,” accusing White of promoting a distorted version of Christianity. Others voiced concerns that the appointment undermines biblical doctrine, with one Orthodox Christian leader stating, “Even though President Trump is enforcing laws that align with Christian values, that doesn’t mean he has any clue what biblical Christianity is or why it matters.”
White has been a longtime spiritual advisor to Trump, with their relationship dating back to 2002. She previously served as chair of his Evangelical Advisory Board and has been a key religious figure within his administration. In 2017, she attempted to distance herself from the prosperity gospel, stating that she rejects any theology that does not acknowledge suffering as part of the Christian faith.
