UK-based Ghanaian gospel musician Joseph Matthew is facing scrutiny following the release of his latest single, Love in You, on March 1, 2025. The song’s reggae-infused melody and deeply personal lyrics have sparked discussions on whether it aligns with traditional gospel music.
However, speaking to Graphic Showbiz, Joseph Matthew reaffirmed his dedication to gospel music. “I’m still a gospel artiste. I hate to say that religious people, especially people of Christian faith, are the most judgmental. We are always quick to dissociate ourselves from people who don’t share our beliefs, doctrines, and way of life,” he said.
The song portrays a deep commitment to a woman named Maabena, with Joseph Matthew professing his unwavering love and determination to overcome any challenges in their relationship. This has led to some questioning whether the song fits within gospel music’s framework.
Clarifying his message, he emphasized that love is central to Christianity. “Love in You is about love, and the ultimate model of love was set by Christ. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us according to 1 John 3:16, so I’m just explaining that in my song. It’s also dedicated to that special someone which everyone has in their lives,” he added.
Joseph Matthew has been making strides both in the UK and Ghana. His previous releases, including Halleluyah, Nyame Ye, My Story, Not Alone, and The Name, have inspired many listeners.
Despite being UK-based, he continues to strengthen his presence in Ghana’s gospel music scene. In 2022, he held his first concert at the Perez Dome and later performed at the Tema Praise Street Festival in December.
