The Most Rev. Justin Welby will conclude his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury by January 6, 2025, according to an announcement from Lambeth Palace.
A statement released on Wednesday confirmed that Archbishop Welby will limit his public engagements as he approaches the end of his duties. “He plans to honour a small number of remaining commitments,” the statement added.
The transition will occur on the Feast of Epiphany, with the Archbishop of York assuming his responsibilities. The exact date of his formal resignation will be confirmed by the Privy Council.
Archbishop Welby’s decision to step down follows a review that found he had not adequately reported abuse cases involving the late barrister John Smyth to the police in 2013.
As the leader of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Welby has overseen significant challenges and reforms. His departure marks the end of an era, and his successor will inherit the ongoing mission of leading the global Anglican Church.
