Afenyo-Markin accuses Government of hypocrisy over anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of hypocrisy in its handling of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill, saying the party is now distancing itself from legislation it once strongly supported while in opposition.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, 22nd October, the Effutu MP accused the NDC Majority of backtracking on the same bill it once pushed through during the NPP administration, even in the face of caution from international institutions like the IMF and World Bank.

“Yesterday, when we raised this issue, you insisted the bill must pass. Now you are in government, in the hot seat, and you are running away, talking about procedures and administrative errors. There was no mistake,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He further accused the government of using the LGBTQ+ debate for political gain, only to retreat now under pressure from the international community.

“You forced LGBTQ+ down the throat of the Akufo-Addo government. Today, you claim you don’t want it. You used it to win elections, and now that your stakeholders, the international community, are warning you, you want to run away. Run to where?” he questioned.

Afenyo-Markin also reminded the House of his earlier call for calm during the bill’s passage, which he said was ignored and led to diplomatic tension between Ghana and its partners.

“You remember that hot afternoon when I pleaded that we manage the situation, and you refused? Today, you are in government, and you now see what governance means. You are in the kitchen; you feel the heat,” he added.

Beyond the political exchanges, the LGBTQ+ debate continues to evoke moral reflection among Christians and faith-based groups who see the issue not only as a legislative matter but as one that challenges Ghana’s spiritual foundations.

From a biblical standpoint, Romans 1:26–27 speaks directly to such matters: “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.”

For many believers, this passage underscores the need for Ghana’s leaders to remain steadfast in upholding biblical truth rather than yielding to external pressure.
