4 Things to Do When You Don’t Have the Words to Pray

Let’s be honest, there are moments when no matter how hard we try in our quest to pray, the words simply won’t come. Whether it’s because of overwhelming emotions, fatigue, or uncertainty, not knowing how to pray can leave us feeling distant from God. Thankfully, even when words fail, God remains near, understanding the cries of our hearts. Here are four meaningful ways to approach God when you can’t find the words to pray.

1. Let Your Tears Speak

Sometimes, tears express what words cannot. The Bible reminds us in Psalm 56:8 that God collects every tear we shed. He understands the pain, joy, or longing behind them, even if we can’t articulate our feelings. Let the tears flow, knowing that God hears the unspoken prayers in each drop.

Don’t hold back your emotions. Surrender them to God, trusting Him to interpret your heart’s cries.

2. Lean on the Holy Spirit

When words fail, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Romans 8:26 assures us that “the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” Even when you can’t put your thoughts into coherent sentences, the Holy Spirit bridges the gap, presenting your needs before God.

In silence, invite the Holy Spirit to intercede for you. Simply sit in God’s presence and let His Spirit do the talking.

3. Pray Through Scripture

God’s Word is full of prayers and promises that can guide you when you’re struggling to find your own. Psalms, in particular, contains heartfelt prayers that reflect a range of emotions—from despair to hope. Open your Bible and let the words of Scripture become your prayer.

For example, you can read Psalm 23, Psalm 42, or the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) aloud. As you do, let those words resonate with your heart.

4. Sit in Silent Worship

Sometimes, the most profound prayer is quiet worship. Instead of trying to force words, sit still in God’s presence and focus on His character. Reflect on His love, faithfulness, and grace. Play worship music, meditate on His goodness, or simply whisper, “Thank You, Lord.”

Set aside five minutes to be still before God. Let the quietness of your heart be an act of surrender and trust.

Not having the words to pray doesn’t mean you’re distant from God—it often means you’re drawing closer to Him in ways deeper than words. Remember, God isn’t limited by our vocabulary. He sees your heart, hears your silence, and responds with love.

In those moments of speechlessness, lean into God’s presence. He is near, even when you don’t know what to say. Let Him carry you, comfort you, and remind you that He is always listening.

When was the last time you struggled to pray? How can these steps help you draw closer to God in those moments?
