The bishops of the European Union have reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing that the country’s struggle is not just a national concern but a pivotal battle that will influence Europe and the wider world.
In a statement issued on March 4, the Presidency of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) highlighted the significance of Ukraine’s fight for peace, describing it as “decisive for the fate of Europe and the world.” The bishops expressed deep solidarity with the Ukrainian people, acknowledging the immense suffering they have endured since Russia’s full-scale invasion over three years ago. They strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “blatant violation of international law.”
The statement further noted that the ongoing war has far-reaching consequences beyond Ukraine’s borders. The bishops urged European leaders to remain steadfast in their support, recognizing the geopolitical complexities and the unpredictable actions of certain global powers.
While commending EU officials for their extensive humanitarian, political, economic, and military assistance to Ukraine, the bishops called for continued commitment to these efforts. They stressed the need for a “comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine,” one that can only be achieved through negotiation, international solidarity, and a strong dedication to justice.
Additionally, the bishops expressed hope that the European Union would continue playing a key role in promoting peace and stability, not only within Europe but across the globe.
