Renowned gospel minister Dunsin Oyekan has criticized the growing trend of using mobile phones during worship, arguing that it distracts believers from true spiritual connection.
“The devil has done a good job and looked for things that can easily distract people and then put a device in your head,” Oyekan stated. He acknowledged that while technology can be beneficial, it has become a major hindrance to worship. “I say as much as this can be a blessing, I will make it a distraction for them so that when they are in service, they are more particular about capturing the moment and missing their own movement.”
Challenging the congregation, he asked, “I’ve asked you questions, you’ve not answered me. If Jesus was standing in front of you, would your phone come to your mind?” He lamented that many worshippers focus on taking pictures and videos instead of fully engaging in the presence of God. “You don’t realize where you have come; you are capturing your moment,” he said.
Oyekan made a clear distinction between music and worship, emphasizing that true worship is spiritual. “Music goes to your soul, worship goes to your spirit man,” he explained. “So what we use the instrument for is to embellish worship, not to distract worship.”
He urged Christians to treat worship as a sacred experience, free from distractions. “When you show up in Zion, you must set it apart. Any place you set apart becomes holy,” he declared. His remarks have sparked discussions on the role of technology in modern-day worship.
