Street Pastors Appeal for Volunteers to Sustain Sunderland Outreach

Street Pastors

The Christian charity Street Pastors, renowned for its work in supporting the UK’s nightlife community and the homeless, is urgently seeking volunteers to maintain operations at its Sunderland branch.

Sunderland Safe Haven, which provides essential items such as flip-flops, space blankets, water, hats, gloves, and sleeping bags, typically operates every Saturday night. However, a significant decline in volunteer numbers, particularly after the Covid-19 pandemic, has left the initiative struggling to continue its mission.

Julie Judson, the Sunderland coordinator, highlighted the strain on the team. “We try not to cancel any shifts, but many of us are out every weekend,” she explained. Currently, the branch is down to just six active volunteers.

The challenges faced by Sunderland echo broader struggles within the organization. On New Year’s Eve, the Carlisle Street Pastors branch concluded its final patrol after 14 years of service. Kathy Howe, the coordinator for the Carlisle team, expressed her disappointment, saying, “It’s a shame. It’s very much needed out there—there are vulnerable people out there for all sorts of different reasons.”

Street Pastors’ impact in 2023 underscores the significance of its work. The charity assisted 120 individuals last year, provided refuge for 23 in its Safe Zone, and transported five people to the hospital.

Describing its mission, the charity states, “Christians rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in practically responding to the problems of crime and safety.”

Despite the challenges, Judson shared the rewards of serving in this ministry. “It’s really challenging work, but it’s fun too because you meet so many lovely people—those out partying, the door staff, the police,” she said. “I get more hugs and handshakes working in the night-time economy than anywhere else.”

The charity’s leaders are hopeful that more individuals will answer the call to serve, ensuring the sustainability of this vital outreach effort in Sunderland and beyond.
