Three members of the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Nigeria lost their lives in a violent clash with the Global Methodist Church of Nigeria (GMCN) in Taraba State, reportedly stemming from disagreements over same-sex relationships.
The tragic incident unfolded in the village of Bunkabu, where 27-year-old Elisha Masoyi, a UMC member, and two young children aged four and two were killed. The children perished after huts in the area were set ablaze during escalating violence, according to reports from UM News.
Gunfire reportedly broke out at a UMC in the Northeast Conference, leading to Masoyi’s death and leaving ten other congregants injured. In response to the unrest, authorities closed churches belonging to both denominations in the nearby community of Munga Dosso in an attempt to restore order.
The conflict arises from the UMC’s decision earlier this year to affirm same-sex relationships within the denomination, a stance strongly opposed by the GMCN, a conservative splinter group.
UMC bishops denounced the violence, stating, “We are outraged that such an atrocity would occur among Christians.” They called for justice, unity, and peace while urging the GMCN to pursue accountability for the loss of life.
The GMCN expressed sorrow over the incident in a separate statement, attributing the violence to “an unknown person whose aim was to provoke hostility.” They also appealed to the Munga Dosso community to prioritize reconciliation and peace.
Local authorities and church leaders continue to investigate the incident while urging both denominations to remain calm and work toward healing. The tragedy highlights the growing tensions within Christian communities worldwide over issues of doctrine and social change.
