Prestwich Carol Service Criticized for Religious Focus

A children’s carol service in Prestwich has drawn criticism following a complaint that it was “promoting Christianity” and unsuitable for a community event.

The festive gathering, hosted at the Rectory Green complex near Prestwich village, featured performances from students of St Mary’s CE Primary School, including carols, Christmas songs, and dances. Organized by the Prestwich and North Western Housing Association, the event marked its second year of bringing the community together during the holiday season.

Mike Corfield, CEO of the housing association, described the service as “a delightful evening,” appreciated by attendees, including residents and parents of the performers. However, prior to the event, a complaint was lodged, questioning its religious undertones and appropriateness for the broader community.

In response, the association addressed the concern in its December newsletter, with Corfield stating: “When we agreed to support this event, we had no intention of causing offense to anyone.” To gauge community sentiment, a survey was launched among the 200 tenants of Rectory Court. Approximately 20 percent of residents have responded so far, all of whom expressed support for the service.

The carol service, inspired by a local community member’s idea, has grown into a cherished tradition. Corfield highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the event possible, noting contributions from tenants in decorating the space and the dedication of the children and teachers in preparing their performances.

“Supporting the carol singing is an important part of building community spirit and bringing joy during the festive season,” Corfield added, emphasizing that the association values feedback and adheres to the housing ombudsman’s complaints code.

The results of the survey, which will guide future decisions about such events, are expected to be published in the new year.
