BBC

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards on Tuesday, December 17, featured a moment of deep reflection as Dr. Mark Prince OBE delivered a heartfelt speech crediting his faith in God for sustaining him after the tragic loss of his son.

Dr. Prince, a tireless advocate against knife crime, was presented with the Helen Rollason Award for his extraordinary humanitarian efforts. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate remarkable courage, resilience, and contributions to society.

His son, Kiyan Prince, was an aspiring footballer with Queens Park Rangers’ academy team. At just 15 years old, Kiyan was fatally stabbed on May 18, 2006, while intervening to break up a schoolyard fight in London.

Reflecting on his journey during his acceptance speech, Dr. Prince credited Jesus Christ as his source of hope and strength amid unimaginable grief. “I am proud that at a time when everything seemed like there was no hope, I stayed believing and trusting that Jesus Christ my saviour was going to use me to do great things still in the name of my son,” he said.

Dr. Prince emphasized the power of forgiveness and the ability to choose one’s response to adversity, despite the painful circumstances. “God has given us a choice. We can choose how we deal with it,” he added, highlighting his decision to rise above bitterness and revenge.

The audience, moved by his testimony, responded with silent reverence, and a spontaneous cheer was heard when he mentioned Jesus.

The speech has since gained attention online, with viewers praising its profound message. Comments on the video include sentiments such as, “That speech sent chills down me. Very powerful,” and “Wow… Powerful.”

Dr. Prince’s advocacy continues to inspire hope and healing in communities affected by knife crime, reminding all of the transformative power of faith, resilience, and forgiveness.
