The story of the woman with the issue of blood is one of the most powerful and moving accounts in the Bible, showing us the incredible strength of faith and persistence. Found in Luke 8:43-48, her story is not just about physical healing but also about spiritual restoration and the deep compassion of Christ. This woman had been suffering from a condition that caused her to bleed continuously for twelve years. Despite spending all she had on doctors, her condition grew worse. Yet, in her desperation, she reached out in faith, believing that if she could only touch the hem of Jesus’ garment, she would be healed.
What is so remarkable about this story is not just the physical healing she received but the audacity of her faith. In that time, her condition made her ceremonially unclean according to Jewish law, meaning she was likely isolated and marginalized (Leviticus 15:25-27). But her faith pushed her beyond the barriers of fear, shame, and rejection. She didn’t just hope for a miracle, she believed for one. This kind of faith is depicted in Hebrews 11:6, which reminds us that “without faith, it is impossible to please God,” because faith is a confident assurance that God will meet our needs.
When she touched Jesus, her healing was immediate. Jesus, aware of the power that had gone out from Him, asked, “Who touched me?” Though surrounded by a crowd, it was her faith that set her apart. In that moment, He not only healed her body but also restored her dignity, calling her “daughter,” a term of endearment that signified her acceptance and value.
This account aligns with other stories of bold faith in the Bible. Take for instance the Roman centurion in Matthew 8:5-13, who asked Jesus to heal his servant from a distance. He told Jesus, “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” Jesus marveled at his faith, saying, “I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” Both the centurion and the woman with the issue of blood demonstrate that faith is not about proximity to Jesus but belief in His power.
Similarly, in the story of blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:46-52, we see the same persistent faith. Though others tried to silence him, Bartimaeus cried out all the more, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” His persistence caught Jesus’ attention, and his sight was restored. Just like Bartimaeus, the woman with the issue of blood was not deterred by her circumstances or the crowd. She pushed through, determined to reach Jesus.
In our own lives, we often face situations that seem impossible, much like the woman who had tried everything but found no cure. Yet, her story teaches us that no situation is beyond the reach of God’s grace. The world may try to close doors, tell us we are unworthy, or that our problems are too big to be solved. But like the woman, we need to reach out in faith, believing that Jesus is not only able but willing to meet us in our need.

The apostle Paul also speaks to this kind of tenacious faith. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, after praying for the removal of his own thorn in the flesh, he received this response from God: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This aligns beautifully with the woman’s experience. Her condition, which seemed to make her weak and unworthy, became the very avenue through which God’s power was displayed. Her weakness did not disqualify her; it became the stage for a divine encounter.
The woman with the issue of blood shows us that faith, no matter how simple or desperate, can move the heart of God. When we reach out, believing in His power, He responds not just to our need but to our faith. It reminds us of Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” She asked without words, she sought without hesitation, and she knocked on the door of divine mercy with her faith.

The woman’s story encourages us to press beyond the limits of our fear and doubt, reaching for Jesus with strong faith. Like her, we too can experience the miraculous when we choose to trust God completely. Whether we are battling illness, facing emotional wounds, or navigating life’s uncertainties, let her story remind us that faith in Jesus has the power to restore, heal, and bring us into wholeness.
