If God Be for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?

Times of Grief

“If God be for us, who can be against us?”

The apostle Paul, in writing to the Romans, posed the rhetorical question above to remind the early Christians – and us today – of the unparalleled power of God’s support. The context of Romans 8 is filled with affirmations of God’s love, provision, and predestination for His people. Paul emphasizes that, because God is on our side, no force – whether spiritual or earthly – can ultimately prevail against us.

This assurance isn’t based on our own strength or merit but on the unfathomable power and grace of God. If the Creator of the universe, the Almighty who spoke the world into existence, is for us, then no opposition can stand a chance.

Life is full of trials, from the mundane to the monumental. We face opposition in various forms; temptations, spiritual warfare, discouragement, and sometimes, outright persecution. But Romans 8:31 is a bold reminder that none of these adversities can separate us from the love of God, nor can they thwart His purpose for our lives.

Paul’s confidence in this truth stemmed from his own experiences. Despite facing imprisonments, beatings, and countless threats, he remained steadfast in his faith. He understood that his opponents were no match for the God who had called him, and that same God is the one who stands with us today.

Romans 8 doesn’t just leave us with the assurance that God is for us; it goes further to detail the extent of our victory through Christ. In verse 37, Paul triumphantly declares, “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” This means that our victory is not partial or incomplete—it’s total and overwhelming.

When Paul speaks of being “more than conquerors,” he refers to a level of victory that surpasses mere survival. It’s a victorious life where the enemy’s attempts to harm us are turned into opportunities for God to display His power and glory.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Romans 8 is its emphasis on the inseparable bond we have with God through Christ. Verses 38-39 powerfully state, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This love is the foundation of the assurance that if God is for us, no one can be against us. It’s not based on our circumstances, performance, or worthiness—it’s rooted in His unchanging character and His eternal commitment to us.

So, how should this profound truth impact our daily lives? Firstly, it should fill us with unwavering confidence. Knowing that God is for us means that we can face challenges without fear. We can step out in faith, pursue the dreams He’s placed in our hearts, and stand firm in the face of opposition.

Secondly, it should inspire us to live boldly for His glory. Since we are assured of victory in Christ, we are called to live as more than conquerors—overcoming not just for ourselves but also to bring hope and light to those around us.

Lastly, it should deepen our trust in God’s sovereignty. Even when circumstances seem dire or when the opposition feels intense, we can rest in the knowledge that God is in control, and He is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).

Let Romans 8:31 be a banner of victory over your heart: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” This truth is not just a defense against fear; it’s a declaration of God’s unstoppable favor in your life. No matter what comes your way, remember that the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer is on your side. And if God is for you, nothing and no one can stand against you.

Embrace this promise, walk in the confidence of His love, and live out the victory that is yours in Christ Jesus. The world may present opposition, but with God on your side, you are more than a conqueror, destined to overcome and shine His light wherever you go.
