ESV Bible to Receive First Update in Nearly a Decade

ESV Bible

The English Standard Version (ESV) Bible is set to undergo its first text revision in almost ten years, with changes aimed at enhancing both accuracy and readability.

The ESV Translation Oversight Committee (TOC) has announced that 36 passages across 42 verses will be revised, with updated editions expected to be released beginning in spring 2025. These modifications will be introduced gradually over the next two years.

One of the most significant revisions is in Genesis 3:16. The 2016 version, which states, “Your desire shall be contrary to your husband,” will revert to the earlier rendering, “Your desire shall be for your husband.” This change aligns more closely with translations like the Revised Standard Version (RSV) and New King James Version (NKJV). The TOC noted that alternative interpretations would also be provided in footnotes to offer readers additional context.

Another major update will occur in John 1:18, where the phrase “the only God” will be revised to “God the only Son.” This adjustment is intended to better reflect the Greek text and ensure consistency with John 1:14. Other revisions will appear in books such as Genesis, Exodus, and Deuteronomy, alongside improved footnotes explaining different translation possibilities.

The TOC emphasized its commitment to remaining faithful to the original biblical text while incorporating recent archaeological and linguistic insights. In a statement, the committee reaffirmed its dedication, saying, “To our triune God and to his people, we offer what we have done, with our prayers that it may prove useful.”

The ESV has remained a widely used translation since its initial release in 2001, known for its word-for-word translation approach while maintaining clarity for modern readers. The upcoming revisions seek to uphold that balance by refining interpretations where necessary.
