Keir Starmer Praises Churches for Their Role in Healing and Hope During Advent

Keir Starmer

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has commended churches and Christian communities for their vital contributions to society, particularly in addressing moments of celebration and difficulty. Speaking at an Advent reception hosted at Downing Street, Starmer reflected on the significance of the season and the enduring impact of faith in personal and public life.

Describing Advent as the beginning of the Christian calendar, he noted, “It reminds me that the Church is not only there in moments of celebration but for many in times of darkness and difficulty as well.”

Starmer shared personal experiences, recounting the support his family received from his mother’s church during her illness. He emphasized that their kindness stemmed from a deep faith, which he described as a source of light during challenging times.

Recognizing the often-unseen efforts of churches, Starmer highlighted their role in addressing societal fractures, including their long-standing work in reconciling divided communities. He pointed to their ongoing initiatives in social cohesion, mental health support, and rebuilding trust, especially in the aftermath of events like the summer riots.

Earlier in the year, Starmer convened a breakfast meeting with faith leaders to explore how the government could collaborate with religious communities. At the Advent reception, he reiterated his appreciation for their spirit of service, drawing parallels to his government’s aspirations.

Reflecting on the themes of Advent, Starmer expressed gratitude to churches for their dedication to fostering hope and change, drawing inspiration from the Christmas story to strive for a more compassionate world.

“To the churches and the Christian community I say, thank you, for all that you have done, all that you are doing in this season, and all that you will do in the years to come,” Starmer concluded, wishing a joyful Christmas and a peaceful New Year to all.

The message comes as a reminder of the transformative role faith communities play, offering not only spiritual guidance but tangible support in building stronger, united societies.
