Darren Millar Named Welsh Conservative Leader, Highlights Christian Faith

Darren Millar

Darren Millar, the newly elected leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd, has openly emphasized his Christian faith, describing it as an integral part of his identity. Speaking at the Senedd after his appointment on December 5, Millar asserted, “Being a Christian is who I am, and people need to get over it.”

Millar, the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Clwyd West, succeeds Andrew RT Davies, who stepped down following internal party concerns. Although Davies survived a vote of confidence, his leadership faced scrutiny from Westminster Conservatives over the party’s direction in Wales.

Known for his active involvement in Christian ministry, Millar serves as CEO of the Pocket Testament League, an organization committed to spreading the Word of God. He is also a trustee of the Evan Roberts Institute, which aims to preserve Welsh religious heritage and advance the Christian faith.

The Evan Roberts Institute has previously faced controversy due to its historical ties to Yang Tuck Yoong, a Singaporean Pentecostal minister with outspoken views on homosexuality. Millar, however, clarified in 2019 that he had severed ties with Yoong.

Millar describes himself as pro-life but emphasizes personal liberty, stating he believes in “freedom of choice and personal responsibility.” He intends to focus on championing freedom and responsibility while advocating for policies aligned with core Conservative values, including support for homeownership, farming, and Welsh devolution.

Unopposed in the leadership race, Millar outlined his vision for the party, promising to define its future by focusing on what it supports rather than what it opposes. “Andrew had his style, and I have my own. I want to plough my own furrow,” he stated.

Millar’s appointment marks a shift in leadership for the Welsh Conservatives, with his faith-based approach set to shape the party’s direction in the Senedd.
