Rt Rev David Williams Appointed New Bishop of Truro

Rt Rev David Williams

The King has formally approved the election of Rt Rev David Williams as the next Bishop of Truro, a position previously held by Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen, who now serves as the Bishop of Winchester.

This announcement, delivered by the Prime Minister’s Office on behalf of the King, marks an important transition in the leadership of the Diocese of Truro. Rt Rev Williams, who has served as Suffragan Bishop of Basingstoke since 2014, brings over three decades of ministry experience to his new role.

Aged 56, Bishop Williams studied at Bristol University before training for ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He was ordained as a priest in 1990 and began his pastoral journey at All Saints Ecclesall in the Diocese of Sheffield. He later became Vicar of Christ Church, Dore, and served as Area Dean of Ecclesall Deanery.

In 2002, he transitioned to the Diocese of Winchester, where he led Christ Church as Vicar before taking on his episcopal role as Bishop of Basingstoke. Over the years, he has earned a reputation for compassionate leadership, dedication to community engagement, and a deep commitment to fostering pastoral care.

Reflecting on the appointment, the Diocese of Truro has expressed its enthusiasm and anticipation for the contributions Bishop Williams will bring to the church’s mission in southwest England.

Bishop Williams shared his gratitude, saying, “It is a privilege to be called to serve the Diocese of Truro and continue the mission of Christ in this vibrant region. I look forward to working with the clergy and laity to bring hope and faith to our communities.”

The Diocese looks ahead with optimism as preparations for his formal installation begin, signaling a new chapter of leadership and service.
