Pastor Jerry Eze, a prominent Nigerian preacher, has shed light on the importance of spiritual commitment as a pathway to divine glory. Drawing from the biblical story of Jesus’ transfiguration, he reflected on the missed opportunity of Peter, James, and John, who were invited to pray alongside Jesus but failed to do so.
“While we celebrate that Jesus prayed and there was a transfiguration on this mount, have you ever thought about this story?” Pastor Eze asked during a recent sermon. “What if Peter, James, and John had joined him in praying?”
He explained that while Jesus called the disciples to pray, only He engaged in the spiritual act, resulting in His transformation. “When it was time to pray, He was the only one praying. He was the only one that got transfigured,” Pastor Eze noted. “If you prayed with me, the experience I had would have still been your own experience.”
Pastor Eze pointed out that instead of becoming active participants in the glory, the disciples became mere onlookers. “While they saw the glory, they became spectators of what they were originally called to become,” he said.
Addressing those who feel left behind in their spiritual journey, he posed a powerful question: “There are things you are seeing in the lives of others, and you know that I have a mandate for this. There’s a prophecy over my life. How did I end up being a spectator of who I should have been?”
Pastor Eze emphasized that embracing spiritual tasks and discipline is a stepping stone to experiencing divine transformation. “When God begins to come to you with a body of spiritual tasks or an assignment, don’t mistake it. It is actually a setup to graduate you into a new season of glory,” he said.
He reminded his audience of the significance of prayer and commitment, saying, “There’s glory in that discipline. There’s glory in that assignment. He didn’t tell them, ‘Come, let me transfigure you.’ He said, ‘Come, let us pray,’ because there is something in that prayer.”
