Ohemaa Mercy Appeals for Corporate Support to Revive Gospel Events

Renowned gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has raised alarm about the critical state of gospel events in Ghana, urging corporate entities to offer much-needed support. Comparing the situation to a patient on life support, Mercy warns that without corporate intervention, these important spiritual gatherings could face extinction.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz during the launch of this year’s Tehillah Experience, Mercy attributed the struggles of gospel events to insufficient corporate sponsorship. She emphasized that the lack of financial backing is jeopardizing the survival of events that are pivotal for spiritual and moral enrichment.

Mercy, known for her hit songs such as “Ote Me Mu” and “Wobeye Kese,” highlighted that gospel artists often encounter difficulties securing support due to a general lack of understanding from corporate bodies. She explained, “Corporate institutions don’t really understand the business of gospel music. Oftentimes, they believe they shouldn’t meddle in religious activities.”

The singer criticized the hesitance of some brands to associate with gospel events, stating that the few companies willing to sponsor may face constraints due to their branding policies. This has left many gospel events struggling with significant financial burdens, despite producing high-quality shows comparable to those of secular artists.

Mercy’s concerns are echoed by other prominent gospel figures, including Joe Mettle, who recently revealed he had to fund his Praiz Reloaded event out of his own pocket. Despite consistently hosting the Tehillah Experience concert for 11 years, Mercy admitted that financial challenges have made it increasingly difficult to sustain the event without substantial corporate backing.

In her message to emerging artists, Mercy offered encouragement, acknowledging the inherent difficulties in hosting events. She advised, “Embracing your calling is crucial as an up-and-coming artist. When you understand your purpose and God’s plan for you, you’ll recognize that challenges are a natural part of the journey.”

She also expressed gratitude to sponsors and supporters of this year’s Tehillah Experience, which is set to take place on Saturday, September 8, 2024, at the Oil Dome, Royal House Chapel International in Accra. “We’re thrilled to have Frytol and Telecel on board this year as sponsors, along with several generous individuals who are also supporting us,” she said.

Mercy’s appeal underscores the pressing need for increased corporate involvement in gospel events to ensure their continued success and impact.
