Pope Francis Urges Lasting Peace as Gaza Ceasefire Begins

Pope Francis

Pope Francis has expressed hope for a lasting peace in Gaza following the implementation of a ceasefire agreement on Sunday. Speaking during his Sunday Angelus address, he commended the mediators who facilitated the truce, emphasizing the significance of diplomatic efforts in conflict resolution.

The pontiff urged all parties to respect the ceasefire and called for the immediate release of hostages taken during the conflict, which began in October 2023. “I hope that all hostages can finally return home and embrace their loved ones again,” he stated.

Acknowledging the suffering caused by the war, Pope Francis extended prayers for the families of Israeli hostages and those affected by the violence. He also expressed hope that humanitarian aid workers would soon be able to reach the most vulnerable communities in Gaza.

Reaffirming his support for a two-state solution, the Pope encouraged Israeli and Palestinian leaders, along with the international community, to pursue a just and lasting resolution. “I hope that political authorities in both territories can reach a just solution for two states,” he remarked.

As the ceasefire enters its initial 42-day phase, Pope Francis called on all people to embrace reconciliation and prayer, stating, “Everyone can say yes to dialogue, yes to reconciliation, and yes to peace.” The ceasefire represents a crucial step in de-escalating the conflict, but its long-term success will depend on continued efforts toward sustainable peace.
