John Dramani Mahama, President-elect of Ghana, has expressed profound gratitude to God for guiding him to a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election. His re-election marks a pivotal moment for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the nation as a whole.
In his speech following the Electoral Commission’s announcement of the results on December 9, Mr. Mahama acknowledged the divine intervention that he believes paved the way for his success, giving “thanks and praise to God almighty because this successful outcome is the doing of the Lord.” He further paraphrased the Psalmist (Psalms 23) and reflected on God’s favor during his campaign, stating, “I also give thanks to God for preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
The Electoral Commission confirmed Mr. Mahama’s win with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast. His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), secured 41.61% with 4,657,304 votes. This victory also saw the NDC gaining a parliamentary majority with over 160 seats, including notable wins in constituencies previously dominated by the NPP.
President-elect Mahama used the opportunity to thank Ghanaians for their overwhelming support, emphasizing his commitment to meeting the expectations of the electorate. He also extended his appreciation to his campaign team, family, and running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, whose historic election as Ghana’s first female Vice President marks a significant step forward for women in leadership.
