Apostle Michael Orokpo Urges Christians to Pursue Authenticity

Apostle Michael Orokpo

Founder of Encounter Jesus Ministry, Apostle Michael Orokpo has urged Christians to pursue authenticity in their spiritual lives, cautioning against the habit of putting on an outward show of spirituality for appearances’ sake. In an Instagram post on October 9, 2024, his message on being led by the Spirit, he emphasized the need for true spiritual growth, rather than performing to impress others.

“Most of you think being a spiritual man is about attending prayer meetings, making a serious face, or adopting a certain posture,” Apostle Orokpo said, addressing those who tend to exaggerate their spiritual image for attention. “You show up, and people know you fast, so they start calling you a ‘fasting machine.’ Now, you want them to believe you just came down from Mount Horeb, where angels spent the night with you,” he added, pointing out how some believers act for recognition.

He highlighted that true spirituality comes from being genuine with both God and oneself. “I learned something early in life: you’re at your best when you’re yourself. Your originality is your greatest value. When you start doing things only because people are watching, but don’t do them when you’re alone, it makes you a drama king,” he explained, encouraging believers to avoid such pretenses.

He humorously suggested that those who feel the need to perform for others should consider acting professionally instead of pretending in their spiritual lives. “If you want to act, please go to Nollywood, go to Bollywood, apply to Hollywood,” he said, blending seriousness with humor.

Apostle Orokpo also acknowledged that sincere spiritual practices, like consistent fasting and prayer, can indeed influence one’s temperament, but only if done with the right heart. “I’m not saying these things don’t happen, but make sure it’s real when you do them. Don’t be too aware of it, because if you are, something is off,” he advised.

He concluded by defining the true marks of spirituality, stressing the need to be led by the Spirit and exhibit the fruits of the Spirit. “If you want to be a spiritual man, these are the indicators: You must display the fruits of the Spirit, be led by the Spirit, and remain conscious that the Holy Ghost is within you,” Apostle Orokpo said in his final remarks.
