Rt Rev Vivienne Faull has announced her decision to retire as Bishop of Bristol in September 2025, concluding a ministry that has spanned more than four decades.
Bishop Faull, who has served in the role since October 2018, described this final chapter of her ministry as a meaningful conclusion to her calling. In a message to her parishioners, she shared that “the time has come for a rest,” acknowledging the journey that has led her to this decision.
Before becoming Bishop of Bristol, she served as Dean of York and has played a significant role in guiding parishes across Bristol, Swindon, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire. Her personal ties to Bristol run deep, as her mother—who strongly advocated for the ordination of women—was born, baptised, and confirmed in the city.
Reflecting on her service, Bishop Faull expressed appreciation for the communities she has led, stating that each place she has ministered has been a source of enrichment and joy. She also spoke fondly of the Diocese of Bristol, highlighting its generosity, creativity, and courage.
A special farewell service will be held at Bristol Cathedral in August 2025 to honour her years of dedication. The Diocese of Bristol has confirmed that the process to appoint her successor has already begun.
