Gospel Music Must Honor God, Not Profit — Bernard Amankwah

Bernard Amankwah, a well-known Ghanaian gospel artist, has sent a strong message to his fellow musicians: the true purpose of gospel music is to honor God, not to pursue financial gain.

In an honest conversation with Daily Graphic, he voiced his concerns over a rising trend where gospel artists are entering the industry with financial motives, which he believes could harm the essence of gospel music. He emphasized that the focus should be on worship and devotion, not just on monetary success.

“In our space, those who approach gospel music with commercial ambitions may find themselves at odds with the essence of their calling,” he remarked. “Our priority should be on how our music uplifts and inspires the listener, not on how much money it generates. If any gospel musician steps into this space with the sole intention of making money, they have missed the purpose and should reconsider their motives.”

While recognizing that financial resources are needed for music production and outreach, he reiterated that the pursuit of money should always come second to the mission of spreading faith and hope.

Shifting focus to the younger generation of gospel musicians, he also highlighted the importance of mentorship. He believes that experienced artists should actively guide newcomers, imparting critical skills and values to preserve the integrity of the industry.

“If the younger generation is left to navigate the industry alone, they might pursue paths that lead away from the true essence of gospel music,” he cautioned. “When we provide mentorship for budding gospel artistes, we can ensure that the industry not only survives but thrives with a legacy that remains true to its core principles.”

Amankwah is also working on new music, promising to release a collection of songs early next year. He described the project as a sincere “thank you” to his loyal supporters and stakeholders.

“These songs are my expression of gratitude to everyone who has believed in me and my music. I’m investing my heart, soul, and passion into this project,” he shared.

With years of experience, Amankwah is well-known for songs like Your Presence, Mercy Rescues Me, and I’m Redeemed. He has also made it a tradition to dedicate the month of September to his annual concert, Celebration of His Grace, a heartfelt display of his faith and gratitude.
