Prominent Christian figures have offered varied responses following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, with some hailing his win as a divine blessing and others expressing concern about the nation’s direction.
Trump, who secured a commanding victory in key battleground states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, is set to become the 47th President of the United States. This marks his return to the White House after losing the 2020 election, making him the first president since Grover Cleveland in 1893 to regain the presidency after a failed re-election bid.
Evangelist Franklin Graham was quick to offer his congratulations, posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Congratulations to @realDonaldTrump on being elected the 47th president of the United States of America! I pray that you will look to God every day for His guidance and wisdom.”
Christian broadcaster Eric Metaxas, a staunch Trump supporter, called the victory an “outrageous gift from God.” On X, Metaxas expressed his gratitude, saying, “God knew. Praise Jesus. We don’t deserve this. It is an outrageous gift from God—so let us use it to His glory! Hallelujah! AMEN.”
However, not all Christian leaders shared in the celebration. Theos director Chine McDonald expressed feelings of numbness and relief, saying she was “dreading something happening for so long, and then it happens, and you feel… nothing. Numb. But also a feeling almost verging on relief. A release from the tension and the anxiety.”
Meanwhile, activist and author Shane Claiborne shared his concern about the state of the nation, tweeting, “America is in cardiac arrest. Even if we survive this heart attack, we probably gonna be on life support a little while.”
California pastor Greg Laurie urged prayer for the President-elect, reflecting on the importance of God’s guidance for Trump. “America needs restoration. President Trump could have died so easily in the assassination attempts on his life, but God did indeed spare him,” Laurie wrote. He compared Trump’s survival to that of President Ronald Reagan, who also credited God for sparing his life after an assassination attempt early in his presidency.
Rod Dreher, a Christian author, shared a personal anecdote regarding Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, calling it a sign of God’s provision. Dreher recounted a recent conversation with Vance, who had previously dismissed the possibility of being chosen as vice president. “Now he is going to be the next VPOTUS. God is good, and so is @JDVance,” Dreher wrote.

Trump, in his victory speech at his Mar-a-Lago resort, echoed his belief that God had a purpose for his life, referencing a close call with death during an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in 2024. “Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason,” Trump declared. “And that reason was to save our country and restore America to greatness… and now we are going to fulfil that mission together.”
Trump also promised to focus on healing the nation, emphasizing that this victory was “the greatest political movement of all time” and vowing to continue fighting for the American people.
