The Christian Council of Ghana has strongly denounced the recent attack on JoyNews journalist Erastus Asare Donkor and his team while reporting on environmental issues related to illegal mining in the Ashanti Region’s Amansie South District.

In a statement released on October 29, 2024, the Council condemned the violent assault, which reportedly took place in Asumenya. Donkor and his colleagues were covering the destructive impact of illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” when they were allegedly confronted by armed men linked to Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited. The Council’s statement underscored the essential role journalists play in exposing critical issues and holding organizations accountable.

The Council’s statement emphasized, “Such an attack not only endangers the lives of journalists but also threatens the public’s right to information and the nation’s fight against illegal mining.”

Following the incident, the Ghana Police Service quickly apprehended suspects allegedly involved in the attack. The Council commended the police for their prompt response and urged a comprehensive investigation to bring all responsible parties to justice. It emphasized that securing justice is crucial for affirming Ghana’s commitment to human rights, rule of law, and safeguarding journalists in their work.

In light of the allegations against Edelmetallum Mining Resources Limited, the Council also called upon the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minerals Commission (MC) to conduct a thorough assessment of the company’s activities. As a precautionary measure, it suggested that suspending the company’s operations might be necessary until investigations are complete.

As part of its statement, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to supporting journalists and defending press freedom, describing these values as fundamental to a just and democratic society. It urged all stakeholders to contribute to the protection of journalists, ensuring they can report freely on matters impacting society without fear of violence.

Expressing solidarity, the Christian Council extended its prayers for Donkor and his colleagues’ recovery, reiterating its unwavering support for the Ghanaian media community amid the ongoing challenges.
